These Three Things

Faith is the memory of the redemptive deeds of God, which determine and shape your identity. It is where he has saved you, marked you, and named you. Hope is the promise that if he came once (and showed himself to be good once) then he will come again (and show himself to be good again). Love is what happens when we live out this promise in the present. - Dan Allender, Faith, Hope, and Love

Last night I stumbled across some notes from my first class at Mars Hill Graduate School - Faith, Hope, and Love. Two years later, the themes from this class are still echoing deeply. As I dug deep into my folder of notes I uncovered some photos of an installation I created called These Three Things - based on my experience during the class. I believe it is still hanging in the lounge at MHGS.

Three jugs stamped with the icons of Faith (an arrow), Hope (a star), and Love (a heart), hang from a ceiling and fill with light. Smaller bottles connected to metal rods pour light into the space. The old light of the past enters the large jugs and is filtered. Round and round it goes. Up and down rods. In and out of bottles. When the light finally reaches the room it is not the same light as before. It has been made new. It has been redeemed. It does not worry about the things it will light down the hall. It lights only what it sees now.
